Humans of St. Augustine

Started in November 2010 by photographer Brandon Stanton, Humans of New York is a photoblog and book of street portraits and interviews collected on the streets of New York City. As part of Tracey Eaton's Photojournalism class at Flagler College, students take this concept and apply it to the streets of St. Augustine, FL.

Avery Black

Avery Black, 15, is an employee at Stubees gourmet honey and apothecary on St. George Street.

Avery is originally from Grand Junction, Colorado, but has lived in St. Augustine for over 10 years. "One of my favorite hobbies is surfing, so that's something that I love about Florida, but I can't really do that in Colorado," she admitted.

"A little piece of my heart still lives in Colorado... I miss it every day," Avery professed.

Though her family is spread across the states, they still stayed connected throughout the pandemic via Zoom. In keeping in touch with all of her family under safer travel circumstances "We have family in Colorado, we have some family in Texas, some family in Oregon... we all get together for holidays. No matter where it's at, we take turns," Avery assured.

Grace Locke

Grace Locke, 19, is a psychology major at Flagler College and an employee at the Flagler College Legacy Store.

"I had a high school class for psychology, it was AP, and I really ended up liking it. I was really close with my teacher, and they helped me get into the profession," Grace divulged. Among her other schools of choice included Stetson's psychology program, but Flagler was much closer to home and provided better financial aid.

When asked what led her to apply to work at the Flagler College Legacy Store, "It has great hours to work around my classes, and it's nothing too complicated," she claimed.

Being that her parents live in St. Augustine too, "I go home on the weekends to visit them and my dog," factoring into her decision to commit to Flagler College. Working at the Flagler College Legacy Store allows Grace to fully embrace her school spirit.

Jenn Wreggelsworth

Jenn Wreggelsworth, 38, is a barista at Relámpago Coffee Lab, the sister location of DOS Coffee and Wine.

"I've worked at a couple other coffee shops... I feel like I know a lot about coffee, but there's so much to know so there's probably a lot I don't know," Jenn admitted. Relámpago roasts their own coffee, bringing a beautiful roast to life from bean to barista. Jenn enjoys crafting beverages using their award-winning roasts and futuristic brewing technology.

When not serving customers at the coffee lab, "I do work part-time as a tour director, so I take groups of kids on trips to places like DC and New York," Jenn stated. Majoring in Hospitality and Tourism in college, Jenn continues to utilize her degree at her day job in the heart of St. Augustine as well as chaperoning kids to historic and cultured cities.
